To apply for an internship at Caltech through the SURF program, there are several important steps to follow:
Find a Mentor: Before applying, students must identify and contact a research mentor who agrees to support their application. This mentor will help define a research project and assist in writing the research proposal.

Research Project: The selection of a project should be based on the student's enthusiasm for the topic and their interest in working with the mentor. Projects should have significant intellectual and creative content, with the potential for publication in academic journals.
Proposal Writing: The research proposal should be technical and specific, outlining the planned research, its theoretical background, experimental techniques, relevance to the field, and a work plan. For returning SURF students, proposals should demonstrate a higher level of depth expected of experienced researchers.
Recommendations: Two recommendation letters are required, one from a faculty member and another from someone familiar with the student's strengths. Recommenders should submit their letters through the online system.
Transcript: Non-Caltech students must submit an unofficial transcript with their application. If selected, an official transcript will be required.
Applications are judged based on criteria including the clarity and feasibility of the research proposal, the potential for publication, the student's preparation for the project, and the quality of recommendations.
